What We Do
Big Sandy Organics is a family-owned business based in Big Sandy, Montana, dedicated to creating healthy, organic snacks from locally grown ancient grains, particularly Kamut® wheat. Founded in 2015 and now owned by Heather and Thomas Dilworth, the company blends sustainable agriculture with innovative food production to offer nutritious, flavorful snacks while supporting their rural community. Their mission extends beyond just making great snacks—they are committed to fostering education, sustainability, and local economic growth.

The company’s flagship product, "Kracklin' Kamut®", is a roasted wheat snack made from organic Kamut® grain. Cooked in locally sourced safflower oil and seasoned with natural ingredients, it is available in flavors like Sea Salt, Churro, and Sea Salt and Vinegar. Known for its high protein content, rich flavor, and digestibility, Kamut® wheat makes "Kracklin' Kamut®" a standout in the healthy snack market. The product has earned accolades, such as being named one of Montana's Best Road Trip Snacks, and continues to gain popularity nationwide.

In addition to producing snacks, Big Sandy Organics has recently formed an exciting partnership with Box Elder School on the Rocky Boy Indian Reservation in Montana. Together, they’ve launched a business program that empowers students to develop their own line of healthy organic snacks using Kamut®, other ancient grains, and pulse crops. The student-led brand, "Brain Grain", cleverly ties education to entrepreneurship. Profits from the sale of these products will fund the business program, while providing scholarships and financial assistance for school initiatives. This innovative collaboration not only teaches students valuable business skills, but also promotes healthy eating and supports local agriculture. The students will debut "Brain Grain" at the School Nutrition Association’s Annual National Conference in San Antonio, Texas, in July 2025, showcasing their work on a national stage.

Big Sandy Organics has overcome significant challenges since the Dilworths acquired the company during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite initial financial struggles and staffing reductions, they have stabilized operations and are now expanding their impact through partnerships like the one with Box Elder School. In 2024, they received a $3 million USDA Organic Market Development Grant to upgrade production facilities, enabling them to scale operations and improve efficiency.

Looking ahead, Big Sandy Organics plans to continue to grow its product line while staying true to its core values of sustainability, community support, and education. By combining high-quality organic snacks with meaningful partnerships like "Brain Grain", Big Sandy Organics is proving that businesses can thrive while making a positive impact on their communities.
